What is your favorite outdoor recreational activity? Do you ever go camping? Of course you do! This leisure activity is at the top of the “favorites” list for many people throughout the United States. It’s interesting to note that in 2013 alone, campgrounds and RV parks earned a combined revenue of about $5 billion dollars.
Popular Sleeping Arrangements
Where do you like to stay when you go camping? While some Americans like to stay at campgrounds with cabins, others stay in tents, recreational vehicles (RVs), yurts, or sleep beneath the stars. Between camping trips, it’s not unusual for many families and their friends to put up a tent in the backyard.
State park campgrounds were the most popular for over 40% of the campers that participated in a recent survey. National park campgrounds were popular for 14% of the participants, while 10% of the participating campers responded that they preferred local park campgrounds.
Camping Trip Durations
How long do your camping trips usually last? Regardless of where they stay, some campers will spend about 2 weeks enjoying this favorite pastime. Campers that stay in cabins or yurts tend to go camping for the shortest time spans, and 82% will spend at least 1 to 2 nights outside beneath the stars.
People that go camping in RVs usually stay the longest period of time. About 13% of these campers will stay a week or even longer.
More campers are using their RVs this season, according to the most recent “Campfire Canvass” survey. There are several reasons why RV owners are opting for this style of camping:
- To travel more often: 64%
- To spend more quality time with family: 47%
- To eliminate stress: 44%
- To travel less expensively: 42%
- To travel without planning in advance: 38%
What People Enjoy About Camping
What do you most enjoy about camping? The joy of camping is the largest motivator for nearly half of all adults that go camping. Just having a change of scenery can help many campers relax.
Given all the outdoor activities, such as hiking, backpacking, fishing, and more, 87% of campers engage multiple activities. Many campgrounds provide the opportunity to observe wildlife and learn about local history.
Planning Trips in Advance
How far in advance do you plan your camping trips? Nearly half, or 43%, tend to plan an outing at least a month in advance. While there are obvious benefits to booking a campsite well ahead of time, 34% of campers didn’t make these reservations. Chances are that these campers like to be more spontaneous. Whether people prefer campgrounds with cabins or campgrounds where they can hook up their RVs, camping will continue to be a popular outdoor activity in the United States.
If you haven’t been camping in a while, or are in the process of scheduling your next camping trip, it’s a good idea to book a reservation as soon as possible. In this way, you will be able to stay at your favorite campgrounds with cabins. Or, if you enjoy exploring new campgrounds, this will ensure that you have the opportunity to do so.
